the greatest gift

what is the greatest gift you have ever received? what is the greatest gift you have ever given? maybe it was a new car for graduation, or a valentine's poem from your first love (back in first grade when boys did that kind of thing). lately, i've been thinking about the power of gifts. what is it that makes them so special? they are a token of someone's sacrifice - a sacrifice just to make you smile. a sacrifice of time, money, or something that means the world to them. sometimes a gift shows that someone was truly listening to you, and sometimes a gift just says "man, i wish i had known this my first time around. maybe it'll help you out."

renowned photographer andrew zuckerman and archbishop desmond tutu recently collaborated to create a unique gift. "the wisdom book" is a compilation of photographs and interviews with 50 of the world's greatest actors, writers, designers, business and religious leaders. these subjects, all over the age of 65, were asked simply to share their wisdom with the world. the concept of the project centers around the idea that wisdom is the greatest gift one generation can share with another. perhaps many of us have never thought about the wisdom our parents or grandparents have shared with us as a gift. it is. pay attention.

a recent obsession

what is it about aesthetically pleasing product design that gets me every time? even better when that design is attached to a meaning. i've recently fallen in love with philosophy cosmetics. they just get it. the goal of their fragrances, for example, states "for the first time in your life people will say, 'you smell so good' or 'i love being next to you', rather than 'what is that fragrance you are wearing?'" awesome. moreover, the philosophy brand understands that lifestyle shapes products and, even more importantly, products shape lifestyle. what would you think about a person with this in their shower?

simple? honest? content? stylish? all it takes is the shape of a bottle and a well-chosen font. marketing is wild. thanks philosophy.
